The AI Search Backlash

Monday · 1 June 2026 · 07:00 ET · ~60 seconds

DuckDuckGo installs jump 30% as users revolt against AI in search.

DuckDuckGo installs jumped 30% after Google shifted from “AI in search” to “search is AI.” It’s the first measurable sign that an aggressive AI rollout has a cost — a small but real slice of users walking away.

The number matters less than the direction. For years the assumption was that AI features in search were a pure win — more answers, more convenience, no downside. A 30% jump in installs of a privacy- and simplicity-focused alternative is the first hard data point that some users actively don’t want their results reshaped by AI by default.
